Reading Buddies is a literacy program that pairs older students with their younger peers for community reading time. Reading Buddies allows older students to develop social and emotional skills, like patience and empathy, as they work with their younger Buddies. Younger students see what being fluent looks like as they have a peer demonstrating reading skills, while also gaining a positive role model and new friend in the school.
Students are paired up twice a month for roughly 20 minutes. Reading Buddies time occurs outside the classroom in various locations such as the cafeteria, outdoor learning spaces, and hallway.
Reading Buddies is open to Kindergarten, 1st grade, 4th grade, and 5th grade students. Kindergarten and 4th grade students are paired as Buddies, and 1st grade and 5th grade students are Buddies.
